Title: The quasi-geostrophic equations for large-scale geophysical flows

Abstract: Large-scale geophysical flows constantly evolve on the

approximate geostrophic balance. Based on this observation, the

quasi-geostrophic (QG) equations can be derived, which reliably describe

the long-term dynamics of the flows. In this talk, we start with a brief

introduction to the geophysical fluid dynamics. The connection of the QG

model to other more complex and more realistic models will be discussed.

Then, we present some new results concerning the well-posedness of the

barotropic quasi-geostrophic equation under a free surface. Time

permitting, numerical results on the QG model will also be presented.
