Title:Application of stochastic calculus in the study of the dynamics of heterogeneous neurons
Abstract:We study the effect of intrinsic biophysical heterogeneity on the activity of a population of leaky integrate-and-fire neurons, whose dynamics is governed by a set of stochastic differential equations coupled by a common Gaussian white noise term, up to a scaling factor. By rescaling the dynamical equations, we derive mathematical relations between multiple neuronal parameters and the noise term. Further, we identify the distinct roles of the mean and the variance for the spiking activity of a population of heterogeneous neurons. To conclude, neuronal heterogeneity leads to diverse neuronal output rates and desynchronized spike timing.
