One of the major challenges in modern biology is to understand how the molecular components of a living cell operate in a highly noisy environment. We would like to know what are the specific sources of noise in a cell, and how does the noisy, crowded environment of a cell affect diffusive transport. The goal of this seminar is to use the theory of stochastic processes and non equilibrium systems to investigate these types of biological questions at the cellular level. We can view the seminar as an introduction to stochastic processes using cell biology as the motivating application, or conversely, as an introduction to the particular perspective. 

Our seminar is based on the book of Stochastic Processes in Cell Biology by Paul C. Bressloff. In brief, the book is divided into two parts: Part I (Foundations)and Part II(Advanced Topics).  Part I  provides the basic foundations of both discrete and continuous stochastic processes in cell biolo-gy. Part II covers more advanced topics that build upon the ideas and techniques from Part I.
