Conference Themes:

This conference presents recent advances in applied and computational mathematics with applications to fluid dynamics, materials science, kinetic theory, finance, and plasma physics. These fields have for many years formed a core for the application and development of advanced mathematical techniques and numerical algorithms in the sciences and engineering. Powerful analytical techniques such as the theory of hyperbolic PDE and shock waves, matched asymptotic analysis, homogenization theory, and the theory of solitons have emerged from the efforts of applied mathematicians and others working in these applications. Similarly, important numerical methods including the level set method, Monte Carlo methods, and advanced algorithms for multiscale simulation stem from these applications.


The research efforts of applied mathematicians in these fields is as vigorous as ever, and an aim of this workshop is to bring together leading experts, junior researchers, and students interested in new applications of mathematics and scientific computation to these areas. We expect that there will be significant cross-fertilization and exchange of ideas from researchers in the different fields, and the formulation of new and challenging problems that can have an impact across disciplines.


This conference also celebrates the 60th birthday of Russel Caflisch, who has made profound contributions to applied and computational mathematics, including applications of mathematics in fluid dynamics, finance, materials science, kinetic theory and plasma physics.

Travel Information:

Wuhan is the fifth largest city in China. It is located in central China, in the midway between Hong Kong and Beijing. You may fly to Beijing’s Peking International Airport (PEK) or Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport (PVG), and then fly to Wuhan’s Tianhe International Airport (Wuh).


There are many travel agencies around the world specializing in travel to China. They offer deep discounted airfare to China via a dozen of airlines. Early booking is strongly encouraged given the increased travel volume in the summer. A good place to get you started is Google or Yahoo where you can find a long list of travel agencies featuring travel to China.

Obtaining a Chinese Visa:

Foreign nationals would need a valid entry visa to enter the territory of China. You can obtain a Chinese visa at Chinese Embassy or Consulates in your country of residence. In the United States, Chinese embassy is in Washington DC, and Chinese consulates are located in New York City, San Francisco, Houston , Chicago. Normally, a Google search will discover the Chinese Consulate in your country.
